Rain, Rain, Rain...November 07, 2009
We are beginning to see a pattern of climate change. The last 4 summers have been exceedingly dry. Fortunately for our wonderful deep-rooted perennial pastures, rain starts in the fall and goes on and on...for a month! The perennials thrive on taking a big, nice, long, slow drink before winter. It carries them right through spring. Talk about recharge and resilience! Our 480 acres is now comprised of 425 acres of diverse perennial grasses and forbs, most of them native, fruit and nut trees, and 55 acres of row crops, including a fraction of an acre in vegetables. We have 54 acres of food grade certified organic clear hilum soybeans still in the field, destined for Japan, if it ever stops raining long enough to harvest them. We would rather not add so many food miles to this wonderful crop, but alas, our local food distribution system has been dismantled and is in the early stages of re-construction for a new generation...not yet equipped to handle this many bushels of beans, unless we suddenly have a surge in local tofu production. Maybe someday...certainly someday, if fuel prices go to $7. My goal is to live long enough to see the day when our food system makes sense again. For now, we will market all we can locally, participate in re-building the system, and sell only what we must to distant markets.
