Winter and SoilFebruary 11, 2009
Winter has been real this year, with lots of snow and cold. We appreciate the snow that has protected our perennial pastures and held the soil right where it is, despite howling winter winds from every direction.

But we are dismayed at the soil loss from surrounding fields and countryside. It's hard to miss. It's right there in black and white--drifts of precious topsoil layered in the drifts of snow. WE the people must STOP losing and abusing our soil! We know the wind will blow and the rain will fall, and deep down we know how to keep our soil from eroding. Why do we not keep our soil from eroding? Do we think we have plenty to waste? Do we not care about future generations?

The year is 2009, and we are still using agricultural practices that render our soil vulnerable to erosion.

Each year February and March are the months of my soil outrage. It's just so obvious now. Water erosion can be even more devastating. If we get a rapid spring thaw while the ground is still frozen, I will stand shoulder-high in the gullies formed by the run-off.

I wonder where our collective outrage is, and if we will come to the aid of our soil in time to secure our survival.
